Rebecca Case Photography Exhibition
The East Lansing Public Art Gallery presents photographer Rebecca Case in an exhibit entitled "Journeys: A Photographic Recollection." The exhibition features images from her travels abroad, and it will be free and open to the public through September 4, at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (819 Abbot Road). East Lansing Summer Concert Series
The East Lansing Summer Concert Series continues through August
featuring live music on Fridays and Saturdays in downtown East
Lansing's Fountain Square and Ann Street Plaza. Music lovers are
encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and grab a bite to eat in

Friday night presentations will take place on the northeast corner of
M.A.C. and Albert avenues (adjacent to the Marriott Hotel) from
7:30-9:00 p.m.

Impression 5 Science Center
The Impression 5 Science Center will host a variety of events and programs in August:
August 16:
children will learn how we use simple machines each day, lay siege to a
castle using a miniature trebuchet, and create a magnetic fishing rod
using pulleys.
August 17:
“How does a simple machine make work easier?” Children will test how
much they can pull or lift and find out how machines can help.

East Lansing Outdoor Film Series
The City of East Lansing presents a free outdoor film series on a
big screen in Valley Court Park, located behind Biggby's, in downtown
East Lansing. The event will be canceled if it rains. Enjoy cheesy
pizza slices from Cottage Inn Pizza and ice cream treats from Melting
Moments Homemade Ice Creams, and don't forget to bring a blanket or
lawn chair.

"Play It Again, Sam"
The online exhibition "'Play It Again, Sam' -- Lost Chords of the
Labor and Progressive Movements" features music from the 1930-40s, a
particularly fertile period of the labor and progressive movements.
There are a number of little known songs, songs that are in danger of
passing, unrecognized, into our musical history. The songs are sung by

One Book, One Community
The month-long One Book, One Community program kicks off on August 20 with the visit of Benjamin Ajak, co-author of “They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky,” who will give an account of his experiences as a Lost Boy of Sudan. The event will take place at the East Lansing High School auditorium, with doors opening at 6:45 p.m. (admission is free and attendees will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis). The OBOC program is co-sponsored by the City of East Lansing and Michigan State University, and it encourages the city-university community to read the same book and come together to discuss it in a variety of settings. The book is also an assigned reading for all incoming MSU freshmen. A series of events centered on the book will take place from August 20-September 18. “Permanent Collection” by Thomas Gibbons
The BoarsHead Theatre’s 2008-2009 season will start with “Permanent Collection” by Thomas Gibbons. The performance is a searing drama starring Meshach Taylor and it will run from September 3-21. For a schedule of performances and further details please visit the BoarsHead Theatre website.
The Picture Man: Lansing through the Lens of R. C. Leavenworth
Michigan Historical Museum (702 West Kalamazoo Street, Lansing) features "The Picture Man: Lansing through the Lens of R. C. Leavenworth" in its special exhibit gallery through September 30. R. C. Leavenworth, using a horse-drawn darkroom, started out photographing lumbering and mining camps in northern Michigan. In 1919, he moved to Lansing to document the Capital City's transformation into an automobile manufacturing center. His photography captured images as diverse as street scenes, car parts, labor strikes, vaudeville troupes and football games. Admission is free of charge. Art History through Touch and Sound
Art Education for the Blind presents Art History through Touch and Sound Online. This is a unique multi-sensory art encyclopedia for people with visual impairments and all students of art. Join discussion groups with experts, community listservs, and find information on programs near you; explore Web-based art courses; review the Disability Awareness Training, Handbook for Museums and Educators, audio course, teacher resource center, and other research. Allen Street Farmers’ Market
The Allen Street Farmers’ Market, located on the corner of E. Kalamazoo and Allen St., has opened for its 5th season and will run every Wednesday through October 29. New extended hours run from 2:30 – 7:00 p.m. until Labor Day. The market features local farmers, vendors, and Eastside neighbors. Among a few of the current offerings are: AppleSchram Orchards’ sweet or hot Italian Brats/Sausages; Felzke Farm Strawberries; green onions, greens, and flowers at the Vangs’ booth; potted herbs and perennial butterfly bushes from Clark Sugarbush; organic shell, flat & sugar snap peas from Nodding Thistle Farm; free-range beef, chicken and turkey sausage, whitefish, walleye and yellow perch from Alice's Kitchen. Community Photo Contest
The City of East Lansing is hosting a 2008 Community Photo Contest: "The Essence of East Lansing." Submit up to five photographs for possible inclusion in the 2009 Community Calendar & 2008 Annual Report. From outdoor community events and attractions to public art, a vibrant downtown, beautiful neighborhoods, community parks and more, East Lansing is the perfect muse for any photographer. Deadline for submission is Wednesday, September 10 at 5 p.m. Photos can be submitted two ways: 1) Upload Photos Online (entry and model release forms still must be mailed or faxed to City Hall) OR 2) Mail or drop off photos on a CD to City Hall (entry and model release forms must accompany CD).
